Sell Sheets: Must-Haves For Best Sellers

A sell sheet is a succinct, one-pager document that tells all the details of your book. It is useful for promoting your book to retailers, wholesalers, and ordinary consumers. For any author with a just-published book, a sell sheet is a must-have in your media kit.

A sell sheet is different from a press release in that a press release is slanted towards the news that your book is generating. A sell sheet is more of an announcement and tells readers and the sales and marketing aspect your book.

A good sell sheet has the following information:

  • Book title
  • Author
  • Category or genre of the book
  • ISBN
  • Book format (Hardbound or trade paperback?)
  • Publication date:
  • Book’s number of pages
  • Retail price
  • Trim or dimensions the book
  • Places where book is initially available
  • First print run
  • Synopsis of book
  • Book reviews
  • Marketing plan: promotional budget and author events
  • Author biography

Sell Sheets Vs Brochures

A sell sheet is basically more of a brochure than anything else. The only difference is that a sell sheet follows the formula of book information plus small thumbnail of your book’s jacket. In any case, both sell sheet and brochures rely on a combination of good copy, great graphics and thoughtful design to create buzz for your business and generate more sales. A brochure can have many pages; a sell sheet is typically just a single sheet of paper printed on one, or both, sides. A typical brochure also contains exhaustive information on a product, service or event. Sell sheets are very niche towards recently published books.

Sell sheets are of great use to writers, especially those who are keen on creating a best seller.

Why You Should Bother with Sell Sheets

You have to admit that printed sell sheets are more appealing than online sell sheets, which authors may email to book merchants and the press. It would be a mistake not to print printed sell sheets, it is even a great irony considering that the products being sold by sell sheets are printed books.

A nicely designed and professionally printed sell sheets invariably lend more credibility to you as a book author and to your book as well.

Sell Sheets: Different Sizes For Different Budgets

Sell sheets can come in different sizes, and each comes at a different cost: letter-size (8.5” x 11”), letter-half size (5.5” x 8.5”), A4 (8.27” x 11.69”), A5 (5.83” x 8.27”), and A6 (4.13” x 5.83”).

We can fold the larger-sized sell sheets into smaller sizes for a small fee. Sell sheets are typically printed in full color printing or printing in CMYK (4 color process printing). We also offer black and white, one color printing, and two-color printing as well. Depending on your sell sheet’s design, you can have one side or both sides of the paper printed on.

We also offer a varnish coating option on our print jobs. Varnish is a liquid coating that is applied to the paper for both protection and appearance. Apart from giving your sell sheet a layer of protection, varnish coating also lends a more professional look to your sell sheet.

We have many different paper stocks for your printing needs. Easily, the most common paper stock is a white gloss or matte paper. This paper stock is always the most affordable. However, if you're trying to impress your target market and want to portray an image of quality and strength, or any other feeling, then you might want to choose a heavier stock of paper.

It’s easy to print your sell sheet with us. If you already have a sell sheet design ready, just upload your file and we will take care of the rest. If you don’t have a sell sheet designed yet, then continue reading below.

Your Sell sheet’s Design: Tips And Advice

  • Identify your target audience. The target audience of sell sheets is composed of book merchants and book buyers. Your sell sheet then must look elegant in design and with a lot of white space.

  • Use eye-catching graphics or photos to generate interest. Photos or graphics should draw the reader to your message. What this means is that your book cover must have a gorgeous design. So it comes out crisp and clear, make sure your sell sheet is created in high resolution - 300 dpi is required for optimum quality printing.

  • Be succinct, and use simple language. Very few people ever have the time, or are willing to make the time, to read your sell sheet word for word. Write the information as concise and interesting as possible.

  • A simple layout goes a lone way. A good design doesn't have to look convoluted. In fact, designing a complicated layout is going to turn off your readers. So keep your layout simple. Amateur designers tend to make the text or the graphics too big and/or too bold. Limit your design to two fonts to avoid the visual confusion.

  • Paper does matter. The kind of paper that you choose to print on can create a feeling of trust and confidence for your company. If you choose a paper weight of 100Ib instead of 80Ib, it will show your commitment to quality. This conveyance can, and does, extend to your product or service.

  • Pay attention to the overall effect. Creating an effective sell sheet isn’t just about making the sell sheet attractive, it is also about pay attention to the overall effect of the sell sheet. Can you see the message right away? Do the graphics and photos complement the text?

In order to sell books, writers need to get the word out on their latest book. Sell sheets are excellent tools for promoting your books. They can be distributed in different places, can be mailed as part of your direct mail marketing campaign. Sell sheets can also be distributed as a handout with your book’s press release.

Cheap and effective, sell sheets are a lethal tool in your marketing arsenal. When creating a sell sheet, often the biggest concern is (a) how many sell sheets to print and (b) where the sell sheets should be delivered.

How many sell sheets you should print is actually dependent upon the information you put in the sell sheet – if there is time-bound information, then order only enough copies. Otherwise, you should order as much as your budget will allow. There is a minimal difference between 10,000 and 12,500 when you compare the cost of each copy being printed.

If your sell sheets need to be somewhere, then you really don’t have to worry about anything. MyPrintShopOnline can handle just about every delivery need. We can deliver your sell sheets to your primary location or to a mailing facility. We can even break up the mailings to several different distribution centers.
