Tip: How do I calculate the resolution you must use for scanning a photo?
Increase the scanning resolution above 300dpi by the same percentage you will be enlarging the original photo.

For Example:
Photo size = 2 x 3 inches
Image layout size = 5 x 7 inches
5/2 = 2.5 (you will be enlarging the photo 2.5 times, or 250%)
Scan photo at 2.5x 300dpi, or 750dpi

If you need to enlarge anything larger than 300% it is best to contact your local service provider for a professional scan.

Here are just a few considerations when submitting your images or materials for Budget 4 color printing:

Proofing Tips- Should I always Print out a Hard Copy?
Most design errors are made because designers are in a hurry and do not print out a hard copy to proof. When you are only looking at your project on the screen, it is very easy to miss mistakes in your printed document. Print it out and look at it. Check for spacing problems, inconsistencies, spelling errors and design problems. And most importantly, if your project is going to be folded then print it out and fold it to see if the items on the page are positioned right on the panels and to see if there are any problems with folding it the way you had envisioned.

Q: Sometimes I get more than I ordered and sometimes I get less than I ordered. Why is that?

A: Because the printing press counts each sheet, but some end up being thrown away due to quality defects. In addition, if the job is folded or finished in some other way, there is waste in that process as well. Most printers usually run extras to make up for this waste factor, but sometime they have a higher waste factor than expected, and thus you may end up with less than you ordered. Sometimes they don't have as much waste as they expect, so you end up with more than you ordered. It is impossible to count the exact amount of waste, which is why the industry has the over/underrun standards.

Q: Why is it important that I set up my file in the CMYK format?

A: You should be the one to convert your colors from RGB to CMYK. By doing it yourself, you have maximum control over the results. You may notice a shift in color when converting from RGB to CMYK. If you do not like the appearance in CMYK, it is recommend that you make adjustments while working in CMYK (usually lightening will help achieve your desired look.) Generally, you should specify CMYK color builds that look a little lighter than you want, since the dots of ink "fatten up" on press, giving you more pigment on paper than you see on your monitor. Be especially careful to keep backgrounds light if there is black or dark colored text over it, so that the text remains readable.

Make note of your printer's requirements when sending images. You may need to adjust your image, crop your image or customize your image in some cases before sending. Some commercial printing services for example, require images in .jpg format for example while others require images in certain sizes.

Ask your printer in Los Angeles California if they customize images, or if you need to manipulate images on your own prior to submitting for print jobs. Many inexpensive software programs including Adobe Photoshop allow you to customize images rather easily.

Consider the word count for all brochures you are creating. Remember most times when working with brochures you will have to limit the word count to make sure there is enough space in your brochure to include everything you have to say. The same is often true when printing newsletters; most times whether creating a custom newsletter or using a template, you have to limit the word count.

Tip: Is there a way to calculate the size you must reduce (shrink) an Internet image so that it will print the highest quality possible?

Reduce the size to 24% of its original size. (Because 72dpi is 24% of the 300dpi resolution you want)

For Example:

Internet Image that is 3 inches x 3 inches, at 72dpi
You want to shrink it enough to get it to 300dpi for crisp printing
72 divided 300 = 0.24
3 inches x 0.24 = 0.72 inches
