You can improve your company's overall presence in the market by initiating a direct mail campaign, whether by snail mail or through online ventures. One thing to consider when doing so is taking advantage of Low cost printing deals many online commercial printing services have to offer.

Tip: The human eye cannot detect the squares of color if there are 300 or more in an inch. For clear and crisp printing, images at their final size in the layout should be at 300dpi (dots per inch = squares of color in an inch) or 400dpi if the images include text.

Here are some tips to consider when placing an order at your bargain print shop:

Q: What are over and under runs?

A: Printing industry trade standards allow for over/under shipments of plus or minus 10%. If you need an exact quantity for a mailing or other promotion, it is recommend that you order 5% over the minimum quantity you need.

Q: Will the printers match a sample I print out on my own printer, or a previously printed sample?

A: They will try their best, but because printers and output devices vary wildly, there is no guarantee that your finished piece will look exactly like your printed sample. Even from one commercial printing firm to another, there can be noticeable differences in results.

Printers will print from your files, and there is no way they can guarantee it will match a previously printed sample. They will, however, do their best to produce a top-notch piece. In particular, inkjet and laser prints are known to look substantially different than true offset lithography. The final product they produce for you will not match the output from your inkjet printer -- it will look better and more professional!

Q: Is there anything special I need to do for a 2 color job?

A: It depends on whether or not your job is printed in four color process, or as a one or two color job. If you need print one or two colors, it is recommended using PMS (Pantone Matching System) colors, and your colors will match what is shown in the PMS books. This may or may not match what you see on your screen. If color is critical for the piece, you should think about purchasing your own PMS books.

To make sure they print the correct color keep this in mind. If they print in full color or four color process, make sure that when you set up your file, you set it up in CMYK - NOT RGB.

Find out what type of files they prefer. Most gladly create documents from Word files and PowerPoint files, but check to make sure.

Make sure your printer sends you a proof of the final documents produced so you can verify their accuracy.

Check to see what other formats the printer accepts, as you may find others work better for you (like PDF files or Pagemaker files).

If your job requires the printer create an exact color match, make sure you verify a color proof first so the printer can make adjustments if necessary to your order.

Check to see how much bleed you need to allow for in certain cases, like for envelopes or custom brochures.

Tip: Resolution and size of an image are in inverse proportion to each other. An image 2 inches x 2 inches in size at 300dpi increased in the layout to 4 inches x 4 inches has a new resolution of 150dpi.

Ask your Chicago, Illinois bargain printer if they offer tips for designing your brochures or templates you can use to create your own business cards and brochures from with little or no hassle. Most will have some templates you can use.
