Image layout size = 5 x 7 inches 5/2 = 2.5 (you will be enlarging the photo 2.5 times, or 250%) Scan photo at 2.5x 300dpi, or 750dpi

Q: How do I know what resolution is for my digital camera?
A: Most of the newer digital cameras will let you know what the image resolution is. But there are still others that will only tell you what the pixel dimensions of your image. If you know what the pixel dimensions of your images are either from the camera itself or through the image editing software, you can do a little math to determine the resolution, and the size you need to print the image at for the clearest and sharpest printed image possible.
Q: What if my image editing software does not tell me the pixel dimensions?
A: Most will, but if not, it should tell you what the resolution is. Then you know the maximum size you can use that image in your layout. It is recommend that images be at 300dpi in their final size in the layout and 400dpi if the images include text. Please keep in mind that resolution and physical dimensions are in direct proportion to each other. If you have an image that is 2x2 at 300dpi and increase its size in the layout to 4x4 the new resolution is now 150dpi. So remember, when you bring an image in to your layout you can shrink it down in size (because the resolution will increase) but you will be limited as to how far you can increase it in size.
Here are some tips to consider when placing an order at your bargain print shop:
Find out what type of files they prefer. Most gladly create documents from Word files and PowerPoint files, but check to make sure.
Make sure your printer sends you a proof of the final documents produced so you can verify their accuracy.
Check to see what other formats the printer accepts, as you may find others work better for you (like PDF files or Pagemaker files).
If your job requires the printer create an exact color match, make sure you verify a color proof first so the printer can make adjustments if necessary to your order.
Check to see how much bleed you need to allow for in certain cases, like for envelopes or custom brochures.
Tip: Is there a way to calculate the size you must reduce (shrink) an Internet image so that it will print the highest quality possible? Reduce the size to 24% of its original size. (Because 72dpi is 24% of the 300dpi resolution you want)
For Example: Internet Image that is 3 inches x 3 inches, at 72dpi You want to shrink it enough to get it to 300dpi for crisp printing 72 divided 300 = 0.24 3 inches x 0.24 = 0.72 inches
Ask your Anaheim, California bargain printer if they offer tips for designing your brochures or templates you can use to create your own business cards and brochures from with little or no hassle. Most will have some templates you can use.
