Flyer Printing Considerations

The flyer is a one page advertisement that is either handed out, mailed, or posted in prominent locations. Flyers typically advertise deals and specials from local companies, special events, and music concerts. Flyer printing, particularly if only a small quantity was required, used to be quite expensive due to the upfront costs required to set up the printing equipment. Modern flyer printing can be done digitally, which eliminates the set up difficulties and makes small orders economically feasible. Desktop printers are now advanced enough to allow flyers to be printed without employing the services of a print shop.

Most flyers are intended for local consumption, so flyer printing runs tend to be quite small. In times past this was a serious problem since setting up analogue printing equipment for a new run was time consuming and very expensive. This was because the printing plates had to be created and then mounted, resulting in a lot of work on the part of the print shop. For larger flyer printing runs, the setup fee was not as serious, since for larger runs the setup fee might be only a small percentage of the overall cost. However, if your flyer printing run only required 50 or 100 flyers, the setup cost was often prohibitive.

Today, small flyer printing runs are practical since digital printing technology has removed the expensive setup requirements. Now flyer printing runs are charged on a per flyer basis, so it is not a problem to print smaller runs.
